NZU Carbon Credits
Back in 2005 we bought a derelict farm bordered on three sides by Kahurangi National Park. During the 1940’s this land had been gifted to returned servicemen who burnt down the trees and attempted to farm cattle.
The land was named Kinsterrain Estate and is near Cobb Valley, 600m above Golden Bay in New Zealand. Our dream is to work beside nature and re-establish the trees and encourage the native birds to flourish. The land has several sections of limestone outcrops especially by the Barron gorge but the majority is flat with an interesting geological base. There are several streams that flow through underground caves like Alph caves and this water has been naturally purified and when it emerges as a waterfall it is icy cold but crystal clear.
Nature still has a lot of work to re-establish the big trees. To help, beehives were introduced to pollinate and these hives produce a Premium Raw honey. The Manuka and Kanuka bushes have regenerated widely and are a fantastic nursery crop and source of honey. There are small pockets of mature trees and we collect and plant as many Totara and Rimu seedlings as possible. Nonetheless it will be many more years before these seedlings break through the Manuka canopy but we keep working toward that goal.
At Kinsterrain Estate we remove large pests like goats, pig and deer whenever possible but the smaller pests do most of the damage to the bird life. Targeting stoats is difficult but we have set Good Nature traps to improve our success. Thanks also to the Tasman Environment Trust who have provided close to a dozen traps.
Because of these efforts, the birds are returning. The Tui and Kea are back in good numbers and the Weka numbers have exploded. Whio (or blue duck) have been reintroduced nearby in the flora region of Kahurangi National Park. By buying Kinsterrain Estate products you are supporting the creation of a native bird haven. Our dream is that this haven will help re-establish the trees and birds throughout the Flora region of Kahurangi National Park.
Our deepest thanks for your support.
